Educators say learning environments are positively impacted by great design. Honoring the Tiffany lamp heritage, (modern) tiffany glass was emulated into the design with vivid glass tile accents to celebrate the city’s long-standing local industry above the proscenium and column details. The nearby Sandusky river was accentuated by an undulating form of flowing patterns throughout the building. Taking it from design through construction documentation, O'Leary thoroughly reviewed shop drawings to keep the project on schedule, avoid change orders and obtain expected results.

With strong leadership from the architectural team, the school administrators, teachers and the city tax payers of Galion were taken through the building process  to gain community acceptance to pass the levy for Ohio School Facilities Commission funds. Design features such as antique displays and tin ceiling tiles salvaged from downtown buildings were donated adding interest and aesthetics without adding cost. Acoustical panels were printed doubling as artwork with graphical representation of inventions developed in Galion and a train depot theme was carried throughout to celebrate the town's industrial heritage.

Layout, wayfinding and space planning are important factors in a school with 300,000 square feet. Integrating the outdoors with a learning facility in the courtyard was popular amongst staff. Most importantly, the design must be for the children to excel!

Project challenge: The programming phase fell behind with changes from the district but the construction schedule remained the same so in lieu of split-face concrete masonry walls, the academic wing was built using metal studs and gypsum board.

Total project cost: $35 million
